Physical activity

Physical activity and regular exercise is important for our health and wellbeing.

It may involve going swimming, doing an exercise class or playing a sport, but it also includes every day activities such as walking, gardening and climbing stairs. You can gain the benefits of activity from all these different types of physical activity.

By increasing your level of physical activity you can improve your health in many ways:

  • reduce the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • weight loss
  • increase in bone strength
  • improve self-image
  • improve sleep
  • reduce stress.

If you have any medical conditions, sometimes physical activity may help you manage your condition - just ask a Health Adviser for advice.

For further advice and information on Physical Activity contact the sport staff at uni.sport@sunderland.ac.uk.
