What happens in an initial Disability Support Appointment

Firstly, there’s nothing to worry about, our appointments are informal, and our advisers are all friendly and welcoming.

You can have a face to face appointment or one by Teams or telephone if you prefer and if you feel more comfortable bringing someone to the appointment with you that is no problem.

Please remember we are here to help you. We want to support you to get the most out of your studies.

We will probably start with a chat about why you wanted to see us, or perhaps why you were referred you to us by one of your tutors or another staff member.

If you’re not sure what to say or how to start, don’t worry, we can do the talking at first, until you feel more at ease.

We’ll discuss a bit about your diagnosis or if you’re awaiting a diagnosis, or need help to get one.

If you have a current diagnosis, or working diagnosis, we will talk about how this affects your academic study and write a Student Support Plan together to provide this information to your tutors and outline what support you may require.

We will ask you to complete a permissions form, provide us with official evidence of your condition, and approve the content of your Student Support Plan before we will put it in place.
