Progression Team Roles and Responsibilities

The Progression Team have been introduced to maximise Integrated Foundation and first year undergraduate student retention and progression. We do this by supporting these students, ensuring they settle into their first year of University and receive the support they need. Progression Officers offer 1-2-1 and telephone appointments as well as drop-in sessions in order to discuss any issues and provide support or by referring to appropriate support services.

As well as referrals from staff members and students themselves, we identify students who may be at risk of withdrawal or poor performance using Engage software. This monitors a student’s engagement within their course including Canvas log-ins, library usage, e-resources, campus swipes and printing, and allows us to reach out to students whose engagement is poor and offer support. Personal Tutors also have access to Engage and we will add notes to the system to inform staff when we have contacted a student. We also support this with the use of other systems such as TDS (attendance monitoring), SITs (Student records) and Compass (Gateway communication) to get an overall picture of a student.

Students can contact the team via phone between 9am and 5pm, by email or through Compass to make a 1-2-1 appointment with an officer. Students can come and see the team within our office located in Reg Vardy 206a between 10-12 and 1-4 Monday - Friday when the desk is manned for drop-in advice. There is an allocated Progression Officer to support students from each faculty, and they have specific knowledge about relevant dates, staff contacts, procedures etc. If a student contacts the team we will endeavour to pass them on to the relevant officer to deal with. However if the relevant faculty officer is unavailable, another will still be able to advise.
