Setting up a Bank Account

You should open a bank account as soon as possible after you arrive in the UK. Do not leave large amounts of cash in your room even if your room is locked. Do not carry large amounts of cash around with you.

How to set up a Bank Account

Most ‘high street’ banks will offer customers the option to open a ‘basic bank account’ this is usually fee free and allows you to receive money and pay bills. Many banks will off an account specifically designed for international students.

There are many banks to choose from in Sunderland. Many are based in the city centre on Fawcett Street. When you open an account, you will need your passport and BRP card.

You will require a letter stating that you are a student at the University of Sunderland. You can request a letter from our Gateway Enquiries team via Compass. The letter will show your home (home country) address and your contact (term time, UK) address and can only be provided once you have completed your enrolment.
