Can I apply for an Emergency loan?

Loans are available to currently registered 'Home' students if there has been a delay in payment of the first instalment of Student Finance funding. They are designed to help with day-to-day living costs such as food and travel.

How much can I borrow?

Students can apply for an Emergency Loan at the lower rate* of £35 (£45 London students) or the higher rate of £70 (£90 London students)

*The lower rate applies to students receiving the 'home' rate of student loan.

When do I have to repay the loan?

Repayment of the loan must be made within 10 working days of your first instalment of Student Loan/Grant.

Will I be charged interest on an Emergency Loan?

No, you will not be charged interest. Emergency Loans are interest free.

How soon will I receive the loan?

We aim to provide the loan within 1 to 2 working days depending on the timing of your application.

How is the Emergency Loan paid to me?

The loan is paid to you in the form of an 'open' cheque which can be cashed over the counter at Barclays Bank. When the cheque is ready to collect we will contact you to let you know. The cheque must be collected in person from the University.

How do I cash my loan cheque?

We ask you to cash your cheque on the day of collection. The cheque can be exchanged immediately for cash at Barclays Bank, 53 Fawcett Street, Sunderland SR1 3SD and for our London Students at Barclays Bank, Mall Level 1, Churhill Place, Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB.

You can choose to pay the cheque into your own bank account if you prefer. However, the cheque will be subject to the usual 'clearing' rules and you may need to wait up to seven days before you can withdraw the cash.

What if my cheque is lost or stolen?

The cheque becomes your responsibility at the point of collection and for security reasons we ask you to cash your cheque on the same day. If your cheque is lost or stolen your need to advise us immediately so that we can place a 'stop' on it.

How do I repay my Emergency Loan?

After you collect your cheque we will follow this up with an invoice which will be emailed to you.  This will also include the date by which you need to repay the loan. There are various ways in which you can repay loan and these are explained in the leaflet we will give you at the loan is issued. In brief, loans can be paid back either in person by visiting the 'Payments Desk' in the Gateway, City Campus or online https://services.sunderland.ac.uk/payportal or over the phone, 0191 5152455.

What if my SFE funding is delayed beyond the loan repayment date?

If your SFE funding is further delayed you will be eligible to apply for a further Emergency Loan. To make a further application you will need to speak to a University Financial Adviser to check the progress of your of your SFE Funding. We would advise you to arrange your appointment before the repayment date if you know that your funding will be delayed further.

What if my Emergency Loan runs out before the end of the loan period?

Your Emergency Loan is intended to help with basic living costs such as travel and food to enable you to attend University. It is expected to last until the repayment date and we are unable to provide any further loans before the end of the loan period. If you find yourself in financial hardship before the end of the loan period we would advise you to speak to a University Financial Adviser for help.
