Recovery Connections online support group

Recovery Connections

Our University welcomes and supports people in recovery. We have partnered with Recovery Connections a Lived Experience Recovery Organisation that helps coach, nurture, train, educate, inspire and empower individuals and communities to achieve their full potential. We have made a pledge to commit to reducing the barriers to university for people in recovery and we will ensure that we foster a supportive environment that enables people in recovery to thrive and to reach their full potential.

On the 16th of November, 2022, The University of Sunderland became the first UK University to sign up to the pledge. Dr Tom Kimball, from Texas Tech University, was the keynote speaker at the University’s annual Mental Health Conference, where the pledge was signed for the first time. By signing the Recovery Connections University Pledge, University of Sunderland has now taken the step of committing to simple changes on campus that will reinforce the work across the university, aiding student wellbeing and inclusivity along the way.

Sarah Schonewald is our Recovery staff member who maintains a presence on campus to provide free, on campus support for recovery from addiction to alcohol, substances, and other behavioural addictions. She is available at both City Campus and St Peters and contactable via phone or email (details below). You can also contact Recovery Connections via their website www.recoveryconnections.org.uk/ or social media.

An online meeting provides a regular, safe space for students in addiction recovery to login, listen, share, and learn about recovery while also having the ability to talk about all the regular pressures of university life. Recovery Connections staff, connected to University of Sunderland, will be on hand during each meeting, to discuss recovery.
