What is the best guidance for a password?

Home / Student Information / University Systems / Passwords & Authentication / Password & Authentication FAQs / What is the best guidance for a password?

Your password should be unique to you and should not contain commonalities such as your name, address, or family names.

You should have a password with a minimum character length of 8 characters.

Your password should contain;

  • Uppercase,
  • Lowercase,
  • Numbers,
  • Punctuation/Special Characters (e.g. !?&*)

We recommend that for your punctuation/special characters you do not use brackets or spaces. We also recommend that you do not use your pre-determined 'strong' password provided by many operating platforms as your password needs to be something you can easily remember at any time.
