Register to vote

Voting in local and national elections is very important, often the votes will be to decide on major changes to leadership of the local and central authorities.

If you want to vote in any UK election or referendum, you must be registered to vote.

Register with a doctor (GP)

GPs are your first contact if you have any type of health problem so we encourage all students to register once they have moved to Sunderland. You should only register with a doctor (GP) in Sunderland once you are living in Sunderland.

If you have yet to move, live at home or live elsewhere we recommend registering with your closest GP.

Student bank accounts

When joining the University, you may want to think about the possibility of either opening a U.K. bank account or switching your current account to a Student Bank Account. Often, student bank accounts come with many perks that are not available on traditional current or saver accounts.

Although the University can't recommend a specific bank/financial institution to you, we can certainly provide you the guidance of where to look.

Council Tax

When studying, your household may be eligible to receive a council tax exemption. This will apply a discount to your household council tax bill or exempt your household from paying the full bill.
