Council Tax

When studying, your household may be eligible to receive a council tax exemption. This will apply a discount to your household council tax bill or exempt your household from paying the full bill.

What is Council Tax?

Council tax is a tax which helps local councils pay for the services they provide. The money collected from council tax allows the local authority to maintain and develop the area as well as to provide services to residents. The amount you pay in council tax will be based on the council tax band your property is in, therefore each household could be different.

Exemption / Discount

The decision on exemptions and discounts is up to the local authority, and each authority may have differing guidance/rules around how discounts are applied.

Commonly, if you live in a household where all occupants are registered full-time students, the household will be exempt from paying council tax. You’ll get a Council Tax bill if someone in your household is not a full-time student, but your household might still qualify for a discount.

If you do get a bill, you can apply for an exemption. As part of this exemption process, you may need to supply the local council with proof of your student status in the form of what many councils refer to as a student certificate, however, we refer to it as your attendance letter.

You will be able to produce your attendance letter via the SelfService on e:Vision

  1. Log in to eVision and select your programme of studies,
  2. Select 'Print Supporting Letter',
  3. Select Attendance Letter from the drop-down,
  4. Preview your letter following the on-screen instructions,
  5. Once your letter is generated and you see this in your Web Browser, use your Web Browser to print,
  6. Go to the File menu on your Web Browser,
  7. Press Print & Select Adobe PDF from your printer list (you may also want to adjust the fit of the print from 'shrink to fit', to '100%)

You can then send the PDF document to your local council as part of your application for exemption or discount.
