You may be required to repeat any failed modules if you were given the following decision via your Academic transcript;
- Fail and Repeat
- Same Stage
- Decision held until next academic year
These decisions mean you are undertaking modules with a ‘Part-Time Picking Up Modules' (PTPM) status this academic year. You must repeat any failed modules with full attendance and at cost.
Therefore, you must read and understand the following information.
You must undertake all elements of assessment when repeating a module, (whether passed previously or not).
You will be given two more submission attempts for this module – a 3rd and 4th attempt.
If you do not pass on your 4th attempt, you will be withdrawn from your studies and will not be given another opportunity to study this module with the University.
Please note, the repeat attempt(s) will be capped at 40%.
The University’s rules state you must pass a set amount of credits to progress to the next stage of your studies.
If you have been given a PTPM decision, the required credit amount has not been reached.
You can appeal the PTPM decision but you must prove either procedural irregularity or unconsidered extenuating circumstances.
You must submit your academic appeal form within two weeks of the publication of your results.
There are two stages to an academic appeal, firstly you need to submit an academic appeal to your faculty. If you are unhappy with the decision, you can submit a formal academic appeal.
You can access information about the academic appeals process here.
You can receive independent guidance from the Sunderland Student's Union regarding the appeals process

If you are required to repeat any failed modules, you will be liable to pay tuition fees. This is done on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of modules that you are repeating.
You can find out how much your module(s) costs by contacting our Student Administration Team. You can raise an enquiry via Compass here.
If you are being funded by Student Loans Company or Student Finance, you will need to make a new application and advise them that you are repeating failed modules on a Full Time basis.
You can discuss this further with our Student Financial Guidance team. You can access their website here.
If you have not yet successfully completed all the assessments assigned to you during your last period of study, you may not have enough time on your current visa to complete your studies in the UK.
If you need more time to complete your programme, you will need to extend your Student Visa. Please get in touch with our International Student Support team by submitting an enquiry on Compass here.
If you have failed a module from Semester 2, the start date to repeat may be longer than 4 weeks away.
Therefore, you will be placed on an Academic Leave of Absence until teaching commences. You can access University systems during this time, but you may not be eligible for discounts like Council Tax exemption.
This is because your studies are on pause.
You must fully engage and attend your repeat module sessions, even if you have attended them the year before.
Engaging with your course means participating fully to help you to improve your skills, pass assignments the first time, and to achieve.
Students who don’t engage with their studies risk failing their course or being withdrawn.
