It is possible to speak to academic staff via the Flying Start module, but it may be something that has not been set up for your programme.
If the Academic staff have set up discussion areas then yes, you will be able to chat with them.
There's also other ways to communicate with classmates and academics, usually these are set up through social media accounts linked the course or specially moderated areas.
