Sport at the University of Sunderland has always been important, as it is to the City and to the North East of England.
In 2018, whilst maintaining the use of the University Sport Sunderland brand, the sport delivery and support service became Team Sunderland, who now oversee the management of Clubs, Elite and Performance sport, Community and Outreach, Participation, and other projects. Team Sunderland sits within the Student Journey Service.
Joining a club at university is a life changing experience, you’ll meet new friends for life, train and compete for each other and the university and also enjoy a great social and events programme.
We have over 30 clubs to choose from so there is something for everyone, with all abilities welcome. All our clubs provide weekly training sessions led by qualified coaches and membership includes transport and equipment among other benefits.
Our performance programmes support students who perform & compete at a high level.
Students can access support if they compete either in a team or individual sport through funding bursaries as part of our Elite Athlete Scheme as well as receiving opportunities to represent the City of Sunderland as part of the Team Sunderland National League programme.
Just Play is the participation based arm of the sports delivery at the University of Sunderland. The aim is to get you active at your own pace, there's no competition involved and simply focuses on increasing participation in activity.
There's plenty of opportunity to get involved with new activities, ranging from Back to Netball sessions, to lunchtime runs around the city as well as water sports and adventure opportunities.
CitySpace hosts many Team Sunderland fixtures and events throughout the year as well as club training sessions. The sports hall seats 400 people which allows students to support their peers and create a raucous atmosphere on campus.
Over the course of the year our clubs and teams are invited to take part in various events, these include Varsity competition, Freshers' Fair and Sports Ball.
These two events are both an important part of the sporting calendar and are a great opportunity for students to enjoy some friendly competition outside of the usual BUCS competition, as well as claiming bragging rights!
Freshers' Fair helps recruit new and returning students for sports clubs while our annual Sports Ball recognises the achievements of our teams and members across the academic year.
The University is committed to being an active civic institution, part of a two way process with the local and wider area. The community and outreach work carried out by the Institute of Sport encompasses this statement, and our involvement with the local area is increasing year on year, we are now part of many new and exciting projects working with partners such as HEFCE, Tyne & Wear Sport, Sport England, SUNEE, and the Local Council.
Our National League programme allows both students, alumni and community members to represent Team Sunderland at an elite level.
We currently offer programmes in Futsal and Basketball
