Working with a Graduate Route Visa

Here we guide you through the working permissions you will have to adhere to whilst your Graduate Route Visa is pending as well as when you have been granted a Graduate Route Visa.

Working as a Student

Whilst you are a student you can continue to work in the UK under your Tier 4/Student Route conditions. 

You may be required to submit documentation on your eligibility to work in the UK after your studies. If you require this documentation you will need to request an International Working Letter.

Working while your Graduate Route Visa decision is pending

If you have applied for a Graduate Route Visa and you are waiting for a decision, you can continue to work in the UK under your Tier 4/Student Route work conditions printed on your BRP card.

You may be required to submit documentation on your eligibility to work in the UK after your studies. If you require this documentation you will need to request an International Working Letter.

Working with a Graduate Route Visa

If you are granted a Graduate Route visa, you can do any employed or self-employed work, except working as a professional sportsperson or coach.

We know that preparing for life after your studies can be overwhelming and that's why we are here to help you explore your career options, develop your skills and stand out from the crowd when making applications.  The University of Sunderland's Centre for Graduate Prospects supports students to prepare for their next steps, as part of their academic programme as well as through on-campus and online support available from the Employability & Enterprise Hubs. Support includes: 

  • One-to-one Career Development Conversations to help you explore career options, including employment, self-employment and further study
  • Access to our online vacancy service advertising jobs and work experience opportunities with regional, national and international employers
  • CV and application support, via online learning pathways, interactive workshops and one-to-one appointments
  • Coaching to help you prepare for interviews and assessment centres
  • Opportunities to attend employer-led events, including our Graduate Recruitment & Placement Fair and Student Jobs & Volunteering Fair
  • Start-up support, to help you explore self-employment and freelance opportunities after you graduate 
  • Opportunities for knowledge exchange with employers and industry partners, through enterprise challenges and competitions
  • Access to free, online resources including practice aptitude tests, video interviews and GoinGlobal, a resource advertising job opportunities and internships across the world.

    Students can also access support from the Employability & Enterprise Hubs after graduation.
