Support for students affected by world events

As a global-facing institution, we understand that events across the world impact our University community in many ways.

If you feel affected by global events, you can access support provided by a range of dedicated services for students.

International Student Support

Our International Student Support team provides immigration and welfare advice. Drop-in sessions and individual appointments are available at both City and St Peters Campuses.

  • For more information visit our webpages,
  • Contact the team here.

Wellbeing

The Wellbeing team offers emotional, spiritual and physical support. The services offered range from self-help resources to one-to-one sessions and group support.

  • For more information visit Wellbeing’s website
  • Contact the team: telephone: 0191 5152933 or email: wellbeing@sunderland.ac.uk or self-refer using this form and a member of the team will get back to you.

Faith

You may need spiritual support during difficult times, or simply need space to reflect. Our Chaplaincy service is open to everyone, whether you follow a faith or not.

Your studies

If you feel that events taking place in the world may impact your ability to focus on your studies, please speak to your Programme or Module Leader for advice on how to manage your studies. They may also direct you to access additional, specialist support.

Safety in the UK

We want you to enjoy your university experience both on and off campus. However, it is important to know what to do should you feel unsafe.

We have a dedicated security team operating across our campuses to support you if you have any concerns.

This includes if you feel you have been discriminated against due to your background or beliefs. The UK is an inclusive, accepting society and this is an integral part of our culture at the University of Sunderland.

  • For information, tips and access to an online webinar on staying safe in the UK, visit our dedicated webpage here.
  • To find out about our on-campus security provision and how this can help you, access information here.

Reporting an incident or crime

There are a number of methods in place to allow any victim of crime or witness to an incident to report their concerns to the University Security team or UK Police. This service is 24/7 and reports can be made by:

  • Calling the Security team on 0191 515 2028
  • In person with the Security team
  • Make an anonymous report online
  • In an emergency always call 999

Government Advice for travel

The UK Government maintains a website on travel advice to destinations around the world. This is frequently updated based on global events, particularly in relation to travel safety and necessary precautions.

  • For more information visit the UK Government Foreign Office website here and search for the relevant country of travel using the search box or scrolling down the page.

Remember, if you are thinking of travelling to or from a country to which the UK Government has applied specific travel advice, contact our International Student Support team to discuss any impact on your immigration status.
